I understand the risk of godmoding. After watching the show, the only way I can see a non-bender realistically surviving in melee would be with the warning. Granted, reaction time would not allow anything extreme, just increase dodge rates. Certainly not invincible, no matter how much warning you have, a giant fireball launched in melee can't be dodged. I considered playing around with nerve strikes, but that felt too powerful. Considering how telegraphed most bending is, and the focus it takes, a surface scan would be all that's needed for this. Certainly not reading the minds of everyone around, learning deep dark secrets, and dodging dozens of simultaneous attacks. He's athletic, but physically not superhuman (reason he has limbs to replace...)
I felt that the loss of senses would be a good balance to that kind of power. He could touch 5 friendly minds, but limited to 1 or 2 hostile brains. I know better than to force any action onto another player, and I have no desire to create anything overly powered, just different. He can't effect the world in any way a non-bender couldn't. Weaknesses and flaws make a character fun, in my opinion.
